Why NOW!
Do you remember stories from the Great Depression about those who lost fortunes and others who made fortunes? Those that made fortunes saw an opportunity and asked themselves should I do it NOW?
There is only now. It is incredibly important that you realise that timing depends on your attitude rather than any other major factor.
- You will find the market if you go looking for it.
- You will find the product to meet needs, if you believe you can find it.
- You will succeed if you are passionate and purposeful in your endeavours.
- You will make money, if you have an attitude that says its okay to make money doing this or that.
- You will succeed if you get started – NOW!
Until you start NOTHING changes.
Until you start you will never succeed.
Until you start, everything is still potential but little is possible.
What is stopping you from starting? Have you got your copy of Eat the Rhino, Business Idea to Business Plan in 30 bites.
Step one – is buying it.
Step 2 is reading it.
Step 3 is doing it!
Today is the Day – It is NOW
To your NOW

You could do cut lawns?
You could make money of the internet?
You could bake cakes?
You could…..
Hundreds and thousands of ideas come out every day about what you could do as a business. Every day people are told that their idea is brilliant and they should go into business with that idea.
But every day, thousands of people just like you look at the idea and nothing more happens. Tomorrow is another day. You are too busy today. The children need you. Your partner needs you. You need to work and your boss needs you. Everyone needs you.
In working with hundreds of business owners over the years, one thing is true – if you never start, you will never have a business.
As to what idea works? It is the idea that excites you enough to stop the buts and get off your butt and butt your head against your own roadblocks and build a business.
And in taking your idea to a viable business you need 3 things
- A vision of what will happen to your life and the world when your idea is a successful business.
- A willingness to continue to learn, listen to advice (but make your own decision)
- A copy of Eat the Rhino and the membership support
Anyone with the will and the passion can create a business. It only takes time (10,000 hours) to become an overnight success.
It only takes starting and putting your ideas on paper to make the whole thing work.
It takes seeing beyond today and believing in the idea and yourself.
In the comments box tell me what is stopping you from having your own business. Do you want to be your own boss?

Success Starts in The Fan Base
When you have fans, then you can build your success from there.

In Eat the Rhino, I talk about the importance of your contacts and who loves you. These people are important to your business because they already know you, know what you can do and know if you are trustworthy.Who are your fans? And why can fans help you grow a business
Often your family is part of your fan base but for many people, their family can be anything but fans. My mother constantly criticized my efforts no matter how successful I was or how many awards I won. Many people have one or both parents who think that praise will cause swollen heads or open them to the evil eye so praise is something removed from their parenting skill.
Fans come from friends and colleagues. The challenge here though is that often friends can get jealous and tear you down or put obstacles in your way. And often friends are the last people who will buy from you as they think you should give your product or service to them because they are your friend. The corollary of this is that often you will give it to them because they are your friend and you hope they will do a review or give you a testimonial. Let me warn you, this RARELY happens.
Your best fans are your clients. They chose you. They paid you (hopefully). And if you exceeded their expectations, they will happily provide you with a testimonial and endorse your product as well as sing your praises. That is what a FAN does – they shout your name to the rooftops.
And a fan base, a referral network, opens doors for you. Unfortunately for many business owners asking who a friend or colleague might know who can use your product or service is often scary for us. It is sometimes a real challenge for new business owners to ask for a referral and to follow up that referral.
I remember years ago when I worked with the Born Rich Program and Bob Proctor, talking to people who constantly told me that they had no reason or no money to buy the program but Bill or Sarah down the road needed it. And depending on how I followed up on those referrals depended on the success I had with the sale.
As a Baby Boomer, we know many people. But often we lack the brash confidence of youth. Our confidence is often eroded by rejection. Our confidence needs to be refocused on who loves us and what all the great positive accomplishments we have and those who both admire and are jealous of us for the good stuff.
Your challenge always is to build your fan base. Find the contacts who love you and will recommend you to others. Find the people who will make a difference to who and what you do.
Oh and patting yourself on the back, boasting about yourself (truthfully) is ALWAYS a good thing
Here’s to fans? In the comments share your thoughts on your fans and how important they have been to you and how important they can be your future success. Oh and please share this post if you found it useful
One of your FANS!

All Ideas are “Just Ideas”
And as a prospective business owner, you need to understand that unless you can take that
idea and make it into a viable business, it will remain “just an idea”.
I am currently winding up a class helping prospective business owners understand the steps to set up a business and what they need to know to open their doors. This morning I got an email that said “I will not be writing a business plan because this business will not work as I thought it would”
I shouted “HURRAY”!
Why? Because in every class of prospective new business owners, about 50% figure out that their business idea is nonviable as it stands and they save themselves time, money and emotional stress by stopping now and rethinking. But they now have the tools to explore another idea until they find an idea that will work for them.
One of the reasons I wrote Eat the Rhino was I constantly see business people who have charged ahead and opened their doors without ever considering the viability of their idea.
Yes, the idea sounds good over a glass of wine, when dreaming of getting out of a situation or being your own boss. Been there done that
Yes, you know people who say they want the product or service but people saying they want and people actually paying you for the product or service are 2 VERY DIFFERENT things. Been there done that
Yes, you understand at least one aspect of running a business but what kills many businesses is knowing and doing the details of the business. The order fulfillment/payment side is very challenging to the vast majority of business owners, especially creative people and tradespeople.
Yes, you want or need this product but…actually paying someone else for that service is something you would never consider. You miss the connect between how you perceive things and how others might see the same thing.
Yes, you can create the idea on paper but creating a product that will work is a whole different matter. And when you create a prototype, there are HUNDREDS of other steps to take the product to market. Been there done that
Yes, someone is selling a going concern or franchise but are the numbers really true and can you really work with that business model? Do a search on horror stories in buying a franchise and you will be shocked at the number of purchases that cost the buyer money instead of made them money.
Yes, there are business opportunities online, offline, in property and in stocks, shares, commodities and foreign exchange BUT do you possess the discipline, resources and fortitude to make them work. There are thousands of books and training courses on the market for all these types of businesses but unless you are prepared to follow them SPECIFICALLY without variation then you may find that the course was a waste of money.
Eat the Rhino is a tool to help you evaluate your idea quickly. The monthly newsletter for Eat the Rhino will share ideas, stories and information beyond this blog.
As a baby boomer, you have an opportunity to move into a business that makes a difference. You bring life skills and wisdom to your desires and needs. You can make a difference today. Take those ideas and actually find one that will help you enjoy the final third of your life and more importantly help you to change your world.
Have you got an idea that could change your world? Tell me what you are going to do about that idea. Subscribe now to the newsletter.

Helping ideas become businesses
Read MoreCould You be a wealth generating business owner?
There are three basic types of business mentioned in Eat the Rhino.
One is a hobby business where you take your hobby and make money from it. Many artists, actors and craftsmen do this type of business. They can grow the business but it is basically a business based on the owners hobby and passion.
Another is a lifestyle business. This kind of business is often run by a professional who looks at running his or her business so that they enjoy the lifestyle they want. Many professional practices are run this way.
And the last type is a wealth generating business. In a wealth generating business you can combine both a hobby and a lifestyle business, but what you are creating is a business that goes beyond you.
A business where revenue can be earned regardless of you.
A business with a purpose and vision that encompasses more than just you.
A business that you can sell or pass on to your family.
Many think a wealth generating business requires a lot of money to open but take a look at the history of many wealth generating businesses. Colonel Sanders, Ray Croc, Steve Jobs, Brad Sugars and Bill Gates started a wealth generating business and have grown their business from the garage to multinational organisations. They got the help and support once they established the need. They had vision of what the future would be like for the world if they succeeded.
Microsoft wanted its product to be on every desktop – it currently is slipping but holds 75% of operating systems and probably the same amount of software applications.
Apple wanted to create an entirely new way of delivering computing services and now has people standing in line for hours before the launch of a new product.
Wealth generating businesses start because the owner has a big vision and is willing to hire and work with others to make it a reality. Wealth generating business can be found everywhere
